Audrey 2, Pod 3! I can’t speak for Casey Wayne Studios but this was one of the more difficult projects I have tackled to date. This puppet conceals the upper body of a full grown adult but has to be light enough to manipulate and lip sync to a fast R & B song while allowing the vines (legs) to move freely.
It took us around 2 months for planning and construction on this pod.
Construction highlights:
The head is fabricated out of aluminum bars to form a skeleton frame. We used aluminum over pvc because it was lighter and still offered a strong support. We stretched foam and fabric over the frame and secured it with industrial adhesive. We painted the head using airbrush and traditional painting techniques.
The teeth were made from car sponges that were cut to shape and painted. We attached these to the inside edge of the mouth with the same industrial adhesive used to make the head.
The leaves for both the head and large leaves in the pot were made from lightweight vinyl cloth with batting and wire on the inside to give them bulk and support. The back leaf has a pvc pipe that fits into a custom bracket so it can stand up. All leaves were hand painted.
The vines were made from fabric and stuffed with foam scraps that were trimmed from the head construction.
As always, I look at all my projects both paintings and sculptures...and now puppets with room for improvement but I am more that happy with the outcome of this project.
Here are photos from dress rehearsal as well as actual shots from the production in the Gallery. Gallery shots provided by GCFAC - Crystal Taylor.
